PERRY L. BELFER, Ph.D., Director. Dr. Belfer established Newton-Wellesley Eating Disorders and Behavioral Medicine in 1997. He previously co-founded the outpatient Eating Disorders and Behavioral Medicine Programs at Newton-Wellesley Hospital which he directed from their inception in 1984 to 1996. Dr. Belfer also has coordinated an outpatient anxiety disorders program at McLean Hospital, served as Senior Clinical Consultant at the McLean Hospital/Harvard Medical School Eating Disorders Center, and coordinated health behavior risk reduction programs at Boston area hospitals.

Dr. Belfer holds a faculty appointment at Harvard Medical School and has published articles on behavioral medicine, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, group therapy and cognitive-behavior therapy. Dr. Belfer earned his doctorate in clinical psychology from the Catholic University of America in 1982, completed his clinical internship at the Boston V.A. Medical Center and post-doctoral training at McLean Hospital. Dr. Belfer's specialty areas include the treatment of eating disorders, chronic pain, coping with chronic illness, cognitive behavior therapy for anxiety disorders and time-limited group psychotherapy.

WENDY EPSTEIN, Ph.D., Psychologist. Dr. Epstein is a graduate of the Advanced Training Program in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (ATP) and a postseminar psychoanalytic candidate at the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute. She has been in private practice in Brookline for almost 20 years, where she sees individuals and couples with a wide range of problems. Dr. Epstein received her Ph.D. at the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1982, where she specialized in cognitive-behavioral therapy, completed her clinical internship at the Massachusetts Mental Health Center/Harvard Medical School (1983), and postdoctoral training at both the Massachusetts Mental Health Center (1984) and the Department of Psychiatry, Newton-Wellesley Hospital (1984). She has served in attending, clinical, and clinical-administrative capacities at Westwood Lodge and Beverly Hospitals.

MAGDALENA J. FOSSE, Psy.D., Dr. Fosse comes to NWEDBMED with a wide range of experience. She has most recently served as the Director of the Transitions Program at the Two Brattle Center in Cambridge, where she also did her post doctoral training. Dr. Fosse completed two clinical internships: one at the Cambridge Health Alliance Behavioral Medicine Program and another at the Wellness Community, working with cancer patients and their families. She has trained at the Northeastern University counseling center and has worked extensively with college populations. Dr. Fosse received her Psy.D. from the Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology in 2005. She earned a master's degree in psychology from Harvard University and holds advanced degrees from the Jagiellonian Univeristy in Krakow, Poland as well as from the University of Oslo, Norway. Dr. Fosse has worked extensively with patients with eating disorders, anxiety disorders, depressive disorders, as well as a wide variety of medical conditions where stress or interpersonal factors may play a role in the course or treatment of the condition. Her expertise includes CBT, DBT, mindfulness and mind/body approach. In addition to English, Dr. Fosse is fluent in Polish and Norwegian.
 
JULIE FREEMAN, M.A., R.D., C.D.E., Registered Dietician. Ms. Freeman 
earned her masters degree in counseling and human development from St. Mary's College in 1981, and is a registered dietitian. She has completed training in behavioral medicine at the Beth Israel Deaconess Mind Body Medical Institute and is a certified diabetes educator. She has been a clinical instructor in nutrition at Salem State College and Newton-Wellesley Hospital School of Nursing. Ms. Freeman's specialty areas include: nutritional management of eating disorders, weight management, PMS and perimenopause, Irritable Bowel Syndrome and other medical nutrition therapies.

RICHARD GOMBERG, M.D., Psychiatrist. Dr. Gomberg received his M.D. from Harvard Medical School in 1995. He completed his internship at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, MA in 1996, and his residency at the Cambridge Hospital in Cambridge in 1999, where he served as Chief Resident of the Psychopharmacology Service. Dr. Gomberg has successfully completed training in Psychoanalysis at the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute. Some of Dr. Gomberg's clinical positions include having served as a Clinic Psychiatrist at the Outpatient Addiction Service and the Geriatrics Service at the Cambridge Health Alliance. Dr. Gomberg's clinical specialties include the treatment of eating disorders, anxiety disorders, affective disorders, and psychoanalysis.

TINA KURYS, LICSW, Clinical Social Worker. Ms. Kurys earned her M.S.W. at Boston College in 1993 and completed her clinical training at the Brookline Community Mental Health Center. She completed a Behavioral Medicine Fellowship at Newton-Wellesley Hospital in 1994. Ms. Kurys has been on the clinical staff of Newton-Wellesley Eating Disorders and Behavioral Medicine since 1997. Ms. Kurys' specialty areas include treatment of eating disorders as well as substance abuse and dependence, coping with chronic illness/disability, coping with chronic pain and cognitive-behavioral therapies.

NINA S. MITRA, Ph.D., Psychologist. Dr. Mitra received her Ph.D. from Hofstra University in 1991; and did her Post Doctoral Training in outpatient psychotherapy at Beth Israel Hospital/Harvard Medical School. Thereafter, following her post-doc, Dr. Mitra was hired to work in the Beth Israel Hospital/Harvard Medical School outpatient service. Dr. Mitra began her eating disorders treatment work at the Eating Disorders Program at North Shore Children's Hospital/North Shore Medical Center in 1993, where she did out-patient consultations, individual, group and family therapy. Most recently Dr. Mitra served as the Regional Coordinator/Clinical Consultant for the Massachusetts Department of Workforce Development/ New Perspectives Program, where she provided psychological evaluations, brief solution focused psychotherapy and behavioral health crisis intervention.

MELISSA POWELL, LICSW, Clinical Social Worker. Melissa Powell comes to Newton-Wellesley Eating Disorders & Behavioral Medicine with long experience in working with individuals suffering from eating disorders and their families. Ms. Powell received her Masters in Social Work from the University of Louisville in 1976. Ms. Powell did a post-graduate Fellowship in Social Work at the McLean Hospital Cognitive Behavior Therapy Unit and worked in the McLean Hospital Outpatient Eating Disorders Clinic, where she provided individual and group psychotherapy for eating disordered individuals. Most recently, Ms. Powell has been in private practice, primarily serving individuals with eating disorders. Ms. Powell brings to NWEDBMED a wide range of experience in the treatment of eating disorders and other behavioral health problems.

STEPHANIE PROVOST, LICSW, Clinical Social Worker. Ms. Provost received her Masters in Social Work from Boston College in 2006. Ms. Provost worked at The Laurel Hill Inn, the first residential treatment program for eating disorders in Massachusetts, where she facilitated Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Assertiveness Training, Body Image and Affect Management groups. At the Framingham State College Counseling Center, Ms. Provost provided individual psychotherapy for the student population and established weekly groups regarding body image and eating concerns. Most recently, Ms. Provost worked at Circle of Caring at The Hospice of the Good Shepherd, Newton, MA, where she provided bereavement counseling. Ms. Provost brings to NWEDBMED a wide range of experience in the treatment of eating disorders.

ELISE SWEET, LICSW, Clinical Social Worker. Ms. Sweet is a highly experienced clinician and received her Masters in Social Work from Boston University School of Social Work, in 1991. Prior to coming to NWEDBMED she worked at Yale New Haven Hospital and Yale Psychiatric Institute, providing evaluations and treatment to adults and older adults as well as families. Most recently, Ms. Sweet has been in private practice, both in Massachusetts and Texas, primarily serving individuals with eating disorders Ms. Sweet brings to NWEDBMED a wide range of experience in the treatment of eating disorders and other behavioral health problems.

LUCY TSIRULNIK-BARTS, M.D., Psychiatrist. Dr. Barts graduated from the Tufts University School of Medicine in 2001 and completed her Residency in Psychiatry at the Boston University Medical Center in 2006. She graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1995, with the Bachelors of Science degree in Biology and was awarded the MIT Science Teaching Fellowship and the Jerusalem Fellowship in 1993. Dr. Barts co-authored a book chapter, “Clinical Psychopharmacology and Therapeutics of Antidepressants” which appeared in Ciraulo and Shader’s, Pharmacotherapy of Depression in 2004.

JOAN WARRENSKI, M.D., Psychiatrist. Dr. Warrenski is experienced in the area of psychopharmacologic management of eating disorders having worked for some years as the staff psychiatrist at the Deaconess Waltham Hospital's Eating Disorders treatment program before coming to Newton-Wellesley Eating Disorders and Behavioral Medicine's outpatient services. Dr. Warrenski received her M.D. from the Temple University School of Medicine in 1985 and completed her internship at the Boston V.A. Medical center and her residency at the New England Medical Center. Dr. Warrenski also served as Chief Resident in Psychiatry at the New England Medical Center. Dr. Warrenski completed a fellowship in adult psychotherapy at the Harvard University Health Services. Dr. Warrenski holds academic appointments at Boston University School of Medicine and Boston College School of Nursing.  Dr. Warrenski's clinical specialties include psychiatric management and psychopharmacologic treatment of eating disorders, psychopharmacologic treatment of anxiety and affective disorders, and geriatric psychiatry.
